HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 7 (acn ) Heads of State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joined on Sunday the tribute paid by the Cuban people to General Antonio Maceo, on the occasion of the 118th anniversary of his death in combat, and to those who laid down their lives in other lands of the world.
After their arrival in Havana to take part in the 5th CARICOM-Cuba Summit, they were invited to the political meeting and military ceremony held on Sunday morning at the Mausoleum of El Cacahual, where the mortal remains of Maceo, a General of the Mambi Army and his assistant, Captain Panchito Gomez Toro, lie, and where internationalist martyrs, most of them internationalists, were also remembered.
On a December 7, 25 years ago, on what is known as Operation Tribute, the Cuban people honored those who died in liberation struggles of African peoples like Angola and Ethiopia, where their legitimate governments were in danger of being overthrown by enemy forces at the service of imperialism.
From then on, every December 7, at the pantheons to those who died in actions of defense, built in the cemeteries of all of the country's municipalities, pioneer children, students, housewives, members of armed institutions, workers and artists, attend meetings and ceremonies to honor them, without forgetting the exploits and legacy of Maceo, known as El Titan de Bronce, in such special date.
After the conclusion of the ceremony at El Cacahual, according to the official program of the 5 th CARICOM-Cuba Summit, the heads of state and government who came to Havana for this meeting, along with other personalities invited to this momentous event, toured the National Zoo, located on the outskirts of the capital.
The important forum will be held on Monday at the Palacio de la Revolucion (Revolution Building).
