Diplomats Pay Tribute to Cubans Killed in Action in Angola

Havana, Nov 9 (ACN) In the context of commemorations November 11 for the 47th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the People’s Republic of Angola, the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba paid tribute to the Cuban internationalist fighters killed in action in that African nation.

The ceremony took place at the Pantheon of the Independence Vets at Havana’s Colon Cemetery in the presence of Angolan ambassador to Havana Maria Candida Pereira Teixeira and the diplomatic community, who paid honor to those who fought for the independence of Angola between 1975 and 1991.

Thanks to the Cubans and the humanistic and internationalist vision of Fidel (Castro) not only Angola achieved its independence, but also other countries in Southern Africa, like Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, said Ambassador Pereira.

Agostinho Narciso, president of the Angolan Students Association in Cuba, known as the Caimaneros, said that his organization recently brought her a donation of medicines, shoes and clothes for the victims of hurricane Ian in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

Agostinho said that Cuba contributed to the liberation of his country and the improvement of healthcare and education and in return they will continue with their initiatives of solidarity with the Cuban people.

Angola proclaimed its independence on November 11, 1975 when Antonio Agostino Neto led the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). However the definitive freedom of the country was actually reached in 1991 with the support of the Carlota Operation, a military action by the Cuban internationalist fighters.
