UNICEF continues support in Eastern Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, April 22 (ACN) UNICEF Cuba kept working in the province of Santiago de Cuba to facilitate access to drinking water in areas affected by Hurricane Melissa and given the current energy situation, the organization stated on its Facebook page.

Joined by representatives of Coopération Suissed, the UNICEF team visited a pumping station where a hypochlorinator provided by the agency is in operation to ensure the quality of the water consumed by more than eight thousand local residents, as well as two water treatment plants, which serve residents in the provincial capital and a neighboring municipality.

The Provincial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources and the Aguas Santiago company highlighted that, thanks to UNICEF's logistical support in the last quarter of 2025, bulk liquid carriers provided drinking water to 82 communities deprived of water supply networks.

The assistance also included the distribution of family hygiene kits, school supplies, early childhood aids, roofing materials and blankets for schools, as well as psycho-emotional support funded by the EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid Fund and CERF funds.

The United Nations System in Cuba reported that these initiatives are part of the Action Plan to address the energy crisis and the impacts of Hurricane Melissa, designed to meet the basic needs of two million people.
