HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 24 (ACN) Cuba assumed the role of Coordinating Country for the Group of 21 (G-21) at the United Nations Conference on Disarmament, which is meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
Cuban Foreign Ministry reported on its website that the Caribbean nation will be in charge of leading the group until August 15.
Comprised of 33 developing countries out of Conference’s current 65 Member States, the G-21 is the largest of the four consultation groups into which the Conference on Disarmament is divided.
Its members advocate for nuclear disarmament as the highest priority, given the serious danger these weapons represents to the survival of humanity.
The Conference on Disarmament was founded in 1979 as a result of the 1rst Special Session on Disarmament of the UN General Assembly, held in 1978.
It is the only multilateral forum of the international community mandated to negotiate legally binding agreements on disarmament and arms control.
