Cuba Calls to Strengthen Regional Unity at CELAC Summit

Havana, April 9 (ACN) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel made an urgent call for regional unity amidst increasing US aggressiveness towards Latin America and the Caribbean, as he addressed the 9th Summit of the Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The seriousness of the current scenario marked by multiplied threats demands the multiplication of unitary forces; only unity can save us, said the First Secretary of Cuba’s Communist Party at the meeting of the session of the 33-nation strong regional bloc held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Diaz-Canel described the current US policy as a “clear return to the Monroe Doctrine,” based on an aggressive agenda marked by unilateralism in issues like migration, drug trafficking, international trade and climate change, as well as by the imposition of coercive and unilateral measures against nations of the region.

The Cuban President demanded the immediate cease of coercive measures violating International Law and rejected the strengthening of the US siege against Cuba, as well as the infamous campaign against the island’s international medical cooperation program currently benefitting over fifty nations of the world.

The Cuban head of state proposed to strengthen the regional bloc as a space for unity and coordinated action considering common interests of its nations over any difference.

He ratified Cuba’s stance to keep up its cooperation with all countries requesting it under the principles of mutual respect and shared benefit.

The Cuban leader ended his speech by calling on the CELAC nations to “not delay any longer the integration, which has been dreamed of and fought for from the times of Simon Bolivar up to current times by the valiant children of Our Americas.”
