Havana, Jan 6 (ACN) Brazil as chair of the BRICS group of nations announced that Indonesia has become a full member of that alliance.
In a communique on Monday, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said that the candidacy of Indonesia was backed by the BRICS leaders at the Johannesburg 2023 Summit.
The joining by Indonesia expresses the alliance’s process of growth, reads the communique, according to Telesur TV network.
The BRICS, a forum for cooperation among a group of leading emerging economies, was initially made up of Brazil Russia, India, China and South Africa—the first letter of these nations made up the Acronyms making the group’s name.
In January 2024, the alliance expanded to take on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran as full member states.
The alliance also adopted as associate members Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Türkiye, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
The BRICS members make up for nearly half the world population, 40 percent of the global output of oil and about 25 percent of all good exports.
Brazil, elected chair of the BRICS countries for 2025 on January 1st, set up an ad-hoc committee to coordinate the group’s agenda, including an upcoming Summit of Heads of State and Government in July. Lc
