HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (ACN) In a post on X on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of political ties with the Caribbean community, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel remarked that the region will always be able to count on Cuba and quoted the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who in 1998 said, “We believe in the strength of a united Caribbean; we are convinced that together we will overcome the great challenges ahead".
Díaz-Canel recently received the ambassadors of CARICOM’s 14 Member States, to whom he reasserted Cuba’s friendship and praised the efforts deployed by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to formalize diplomatic relations with Cuba at that time, which broke the isolation imposed by the U.S. government since the early 1960s.
“This fact provides evidence of the strong ties of brotherhood that unite us and of the continuity of the ideas and commitment of our historic leaders, who forged our relations on principles of solidarity, friendship, selflessness and gratitude”, the Cuban leader told them.
On his end, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also posted a message on X ratifying Cuba’s solidarity with the Caribbean nations, which have always supported the island’s struggle to end the U.S. blockade imposed more than six decades ago.
The friendship and cooperation between Cuba and the Caribbean countries paved the way for the creation in 2002 of the Cuba-CARICOM summits and the designation of December 8 as the date to celebrate the beginning of their ties.
