HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 29 (ACN) From the city of New York, where the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place, voices are raised today demanding the immediate end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government on Cuba.
In the debate on this issue, where the majority will of the international community for the end of this policy is expressed, the representative of Singapore, on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, expressed the unwavering support of this group for the draft Resolution Necessity of putting an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.
He highlighted the fact that on thirty-one previous occasions the same demand has been formulated and this has still not been fulfilled, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the principles contained in the Charter of the United Nations.
He pointed out that the inclusion of Cuba on the list of State sponsors of terrorism, far from moving in the right direction, reinforces the coercive measures that make it difficult for the Cuban government to provide basic living conditions to its population and causes setbacks in the achievement of sustainable development goals.
The diplomat urged the U.S. Government to foster civilized relations with the island based on mutual respect and constructive dialogue to resolve their differences.
This call was echoed by the representative of Cameroon, on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, who stressed that the continued sanctions and the current situation of tightening of the siege is contrary to the will of past resolutions adopted by the Assembly.
He said that the maintenance of these sanctions not only undermines the capacity of other countries to conduct relations with Cuba, given their extraterritorial scope, but also reduces the level of international assistance that Cuba can provide to other developing countries.
He considered it inconceivable that despite the reiterated message of the General Assembly and the overwhelming majority demanding its end, the blockade has not ceased and on the contrary has been tightened in recent years.
