UN Secretary General praises new paths after approval of the Pact for the Future

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 23 (ACN) UN Secretary-General António Guterres hailed the new opportunities “to rescue multilateralism from the abyss,” following the consensus approval of the Pact for the Future at the General Assembly, Prensa Latina reported.

“Our multilateral tools and institutions are unable to respond effectively to the current political, economic, environmental and technological challenges and tomorrow will be even more difficult and even more dangerous,” Guterres told the leaders gathered on the first day of the Future Summit.

Among the main advantages put forward in the document, the UN High Representative recognized “progress on reforms to make the Security Council more reflective of today's world, addressing the historical under-representation of Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.”

It also lays the basis for a more streamlined Peacebuilding Commission and a fundamental review of peace operations to bring them in line with the conditions they face.

The Pact represents the first agreed multilateral support for nuclear disarmament in more than a decade, he said.

Guterres challenged nations to “take action” on implementing the declaration of the meeting.

To this end, he insisted on the need to prioritize dialogue and negotiation, put an end to the wars tearing the world apart and reform the composition and working methods of the Security Council.

“For his part, the President of the 79th General Assembly, Philemon Yang, considered the recently adopted document as a commitment not only to address the immediate crises, but also to lay the foundations for a sustainable, just and peaceful global order for all peoples and nations.

The head of the forum called for actions to promote international peace and security, to energize the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, to foster just and inclusive societies, and to ensure that technologies are always at the service of the common good of humanity.
