Havana, Dec 6 (ACN) Cuban experts discard, for the time being, any danger on the island nation from the Sulphur dioxide emissions coming from Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano, considered the world’s largest active volcano.
According to the Cuban Science, Technology and Environment Ministry, estimates talk about an increase of Sulphur dioxide concentration with respect to usual values.
Although there is no evidence of direct impact, the Sulphur dioxide shows high concentration level at high atmospheric areas in the Gulf of Mexico and western Cuba.
A special advisory by the Center for Atmospheric Contamination of the Cuban Meteorology Institute explains that a weekly evaluation is underway considering the air quality. No Sulphur dioxide concentrations were detected this week over Cuba, which could exceed the admissible top of 45 micrograms per cubic meter, according to Cuban standards. The Cuban experts continue the observation of the current situation.
Volcanic gas can combine with other environment particles and make a toxic cloud. The explosion of such cloud could cause eye irritation, throat and head aches with medical significance for those who suffer from asthma or other respiratory conditions.
The Maula Loa volcano in Hawaii is four thousand 169 meters high and it had not erupted since 1984.
