HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 27 (ACN) Cubans and diplomatic representatives from several African nations commemorated South African Freedom Day, the date that consolidated the end of apartheid.
South African Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Patricia de Lille, who is participating in the International Construction Fair FECONS 2022, recalled the significance of February 27, 1994, the date that marked the beginning of a better nation, based on respect.
“No other friend or nation knows more about the sacrifice for freedom than the people of Cuba,” she remarked at Casa de África, in the heart of Old Havana.
Regarding cooperation, the Minister mentioned that South Africa is promoting a housing investment program and praised the skills of the Cuban engineers and technical advisors who are offering assistance to her country.
Sanele Madela, a South African doctor trained in Cuba, referred to the bonds of brotherhood that unite both nations under the guidance of their two historic leaders, Nelson Mandela and Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, as well as to the opportunity for young South Africans to study medical sciences in the Island.
This morning, the South African minister paid tribute to Mandela and Oliver Tambo, outstanding fighters against the apartheid regime, in Havana's African Heroes Park.
South Africa commemorated on April 27 the 28th anniversary of the first elections held in her country after the end of the discriminatory political system, when Nelson Mandela became the first black president after spending almost three decades in prison for fighting against the regime.
