HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 20 (ACN) Antonio Deuna, Minister of Public Health of Guinea Bissau, made a visit to the headquarters of the Cuban Health Ministry in that country, as part of his desire to increase cooperation in this area, praising the collaboration of the Caribbean island in the confrontation with COVID - 19.
Deuna took the opportunity to thank the Cuban government and people for the help in the fight against the pandemic in Guinea Bissau, and highlighted the affection and admiration that Guineans feel for the Cuban health personnel, who is distinguished by its high humanism, professionalism and altruism in the care of its patients.
Raul de la Peña, Cuban ambassador accredited to that country, said the government and people of Cuba will be eternally in solidarity with the African continent and especially with Guinea Bissau, with which they are united by historical ties since the struggle for independence from Portuguese colonialism.
In addition, Deuna held a meeting with Milagros Valdespino, head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Guinea Bissau, Kenia Gonzalez, Cuban dean of the "Raul Diaz-Argüelles" Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Mario Gomes, national dean of the same institution.
This year, 54 new doctors graduated in Guinea Bissau, thus reaching a historical figure of 496 graduates from the aforementioned Faculty since its foundation in 1986.
Deuna was also informed of the preparations for the start of the 2020-2021 academic year on September 7, with a projected enrollment of 481 students, and it was jointly analyzed the medical cooperation agreement that exists between the two countries, which extension for two years must be signed in the next few months by both parties.
Cuba and Guinea Bissau reestablished diplomatic relations in 1973 and maintain close cooperation on health issues and the training of human resources.
