HAVANA, Cuba, July 20 (ACN) Nearly 900 runners participated in the tenth in-person 10-km-long Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro World Peace Race-Walk, organized by the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER), the South African Embassy in Cuba, and the Marabana-Maracuba National Race and Walk Commission.
From early hours, federated athletes and Cubans participating on an out-of-competition basis gathered to pay tribute to the two universal leaders who shaped the 20th century with their struggles for social justice, independence, and the dignity of their people.
Among those present were Ms. Yvonne Nkwenkwezi, South Africa's ambassador to Cuba, and INDER president Osvaldo Vento Montiller.
“Our peoples share common values: they admire Fidel and Mandela, they are brave, and they love sports. This race is a celebration of those ties”, Ms. Nkwenkwezi said in statements to the press.
