HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 11 (ACN) Andres Taño Gonzalez, national judo commissioner, informed today to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that the five Cuban judokas who recently participated at the Grand Slam (GS) in Paris are at a training base in Budapest, Hungary.
Taño Gonzalez added that Andy Granda, in the over 100 kilograms (kg), Ivan Silva, now in the 100 kg, Jonathan Charon (60 kg) and Maylin del Toro (63 kg), led by Julio Alderete, head trainer of the men's team, supported by Dr. Uvelino Moreno, are finalizing details of the preparation now in the Hungarian capital.
He also stated that Boannys Chang, from the women's team, will soon join the team to continue on Hungarian soil until the 28th.
In the Parisian GS, Olympic Silva, world runner-up in Baku 2018 in the 90 kg, won the bronze medal, while Granda, world champion in Tashkent 2022, obtained the fifth place in the multisport event in the City of Light; Charon and Del Toro were quickly left on the way to the discussion of preseason medals.
The federator declared that the objective of the critical route has as its main purpose the senior and youth world championships, the 2nd Junior Pan American Games Asuncion 2025 and the Pan American Games of Lima 2027.
He explained that for the world competitions it is established that the first 100 positions of the world ranking will participate, hence the importance of a good performance in the tournaments scheduled for 2025.
The elite have a schedule that also includes the GS in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Feb. 28-March 2, with its training camp included (March 3-15); the Grand Prix in Linsz, Austria, (March 7-9); a training base in Nymburk, Czech Republic, (March 10-17); and the GS in Tbilisi, Georgia, (March 21-23).
The route is completed with the Pan American championship in Santiago, Chile (April 25-27), the national elite first category championship (May 20-29), the senior world championship (June 13-20) in Hungary, and the junior world championship (date and venue pending), and the Cerro Pelado Games in Havana (December 10-15).
For the juniors, the tournament of challengers is scheduled for Asuncion (February 21 in Havana), the Pan American Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (March 14), a training base in Mexico (March 18 to April 5), and the Pan American Cup in Panama (in April), another in Lima, Peru, (April 8-17).
They will then have the Pan American Championship in Lima (April 21-23), training bases for the women in Santiago de Cuba (June 1-15), and in Villa Clara for the men (June 1-15) and the Pan American Games in Asuncion (August 9-12).
