SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jul 8 (ACN) A brigade of 17 health professionals from Santiago de Cuba will be sent to the western province of Matanzas—Cuba’s current COVID-19 epicenter—to help in the fight against the pandemic.
Intensivists, cardiologists and nurses with a diploma in Intensive and Emergency Care will assist the population of Matanzas, affected by the spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus and the circulation of its Delta strain.
Ileana Palacio, a nurse from Santiago who worked for two months in her city’s isolation centers, told ACN that she was happy to help the infected and lend a hand to colleagues who have been long working very hard in the red zone with no one to relieve them.
She had been designated to do this job in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, but she decided that saving her fellow countrymen comes first, so she did not hesitate when she found out Tuesday that she would be leaving for the province of Matanzas in her first national mission.
Another nurse, Yosvani Mesa, showed similar altruism. He said goodbye to his daughter and wife and assured them that he would return well, but now a sister province needs his help and he must oblige.
“I know things are complicated there,” he said, “although Santiago de Cuba is not far behind, as evidenced by almost 400 cases reported today, but it is time for solidarity.”
Once again, the sons and daughters of the indomitable Santiago de Cuba have responded to the call of their brothers and sisters, as they already did in another province, Ciego de Avila, despite their own difficult situation at home.
