SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Mar 16 (ACN) Three months into the program of monetary transformation, the farmers in the province of Sancti Spíritus are moving forward regarding the fulfillment of tasks required by this process in the economic and social life of the nation.
Pedro Andrés Águila Tejera, president of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in the province told ACN that the peasantry has its sights on increased agri-food production, higher efficiency, and resource-saving measures taking into account the situation of the Cuban economy.
“Task ‘Ordering’ cannot be seen simply as a matter of eliminating subsidies and raising prices and salaries. It is much more than that, as it constitutes a far-reaching change in the country's economic thinking.”
Given the shortage of consumables, fuel and other resources, ANAP is trying to increase production.
“Today we have more than 2,000 farms in different stages of agroecological development, a task intended to encourage the saving of chemical fertilizers, herbicides and other resources through scientific and innovative alternatives. The monetary transformation also promotes the export of agricultural products. We already have 86 cooperatives in Cuba with foreign currency bank accounts, and they will use their export revenues to keep developing their productions.
ANAP leaders in Sancti Spiritus hold that the local farmers have internalized the monetary reform task, aware that everything that must be corrected or modified for the benefit of the country and of individual producers will receive proper attention.
Nevertheless, ANAP has been called to make quicker decisions of national impact in order to reduce the excessively high prices that the farmers have to pay, for instance, the electricity bill for irrigation-related activities, milk transportation, and other tasks.
