Eastern Cuban province saves over 2 million dollars in tire retreading

CAMAGUEY, Cuba, Feb 22 (ACN) The Unidad Empresarial de Base (UEB) Recapadora Horacio Cobiella, in this city, saved more than 2,900,000 dollars by replacing imports with the recovery of 19,577 tires of different types of vehicles at the end of last year.

In spite of the incidence of COVID-19 in the territory, this number of tires exceeds by more than 4,000 the number planned in 2020, Arciolis Duran Rondon, deputy director of the entity, assured to local TV station.

The retreading activity produces a double benefit, since the country saves one million dollars for every 6,700 tires retreaded, and at the same time reduces the emission of polluting substances into the atmosphere and the environment.

Calixto Salgado Baez, head of production at the plant, explained that through a process of recovering the treads, 50 percent of the useful life of the tires is returned to them and they are left with all the parameters established by the manufacturer for further use.

Belonging to the National Rubber Enterprise (Poligom), of the Ministry of Industry, it receives second-hand tires for agricultural means and for light, medium and large vehicles, while it provides services to state and private transportation in the provinces of Camaguey, Ciego de Avila and Sancti Spiritus.
Villa Clara, Havana, Holguin, Mayabeque and Santiago de Cuba also have plants similar to the one in Camaguey, and all of them have a significant potential for foreign currency savings.
