Spanish leading hotel chains strongly bet on Cuba´s tourism

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 20 (ACN) The major Spanish hotel chains such as Melia Hotels International, Iberostar and Barcelo are strongly considering the resumption of tourism in Cuba.

According to reports on their intentions, tasks and profiles on Twitter and Facebook, these companies trust the strengthening of the travel industry to this Caribbean island, based on security concepts and health protection mechanisms.

These criteria are repeatedly expressed online. The three hotel chains have over 60 hotels in Cuba; a business that started in the 1990s.

They have contacts with Maria Reyes Maroto, Spanish Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, in order to take into account pressures from the U.S. against Cuban tourism.

The first company to open a hotel in Cuba was Melia, in 1990. It was Sol Palmera in Varadero, main resort in the country.

Since then, Melia's interests and investments have grown up to 34 hotels and 15,000 rooms in Cuba.

Iberostar has 21 hotels on the Caribbean nation: in Havana, Cayo Largo del Sur, Varadero, Trinidad, and Holguin, and on the northern keys of the central provinces of Villa Clara and Ciego de Avila.

The Barcelo group, based in Mallorca, runs three hotels in Cuba through management contracts, with 2,706 posts.

The hotel infrastructure in Cuba exceeds 70,000 rooms, with 17.6 percent of which located in Havana, and 63 percent are four and five-star facilities.
