HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 12 (ACN) One of the main inputs that favors the increase in production yields are quality seeds, which is why Cuba works to have one hundred percent of the certified seeds that agricultural and forestry crops demand.
Rolando Quincoses, director of Seeds and Phytogenetic Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG), told Granma newspaper that they also try to achieve one hundred percent of the inspection and certification of the areas devoted to the production of botanical, agamic and biotechnology seeds.
Quality seed certification is more favored in crops such as rice, tobacco, coffee and cocoa, the latter two with 90 percent of the seeds certified for commercial planting.
Although the results are insufficient to respond to the demand for quality seeds that the country presents, there are significant advances in the genetic category of these, Quincoses noted.
Cuba now has a Seed and Plant Genetic Resources Policy that allows the rescue and protection of genetic material, as well as plant species protected in natural environments.
In addition, it is projected by 2030 to preserve in natural environments 90 percent of the plant species useful for food and agriculture, and 100 percent of the genetic material characterized in germplasm banks.
