Cuba denounces U.S. pretexts for escalation of aggression

HAVANA, Cuba, February 4 (ACN) Several Cuban national media outlets denounced the pretexts used by the U.S. government to justify the recent executive order that tightens the blockade of the island on grounds that it is a threat to its national security.

In a commentary on the Cuban TV Evening News, journalist Humberto López explained that the executive order is linked to the national security strategy published in November 2025, as both are part of a process of constructing excuses to bolster a hostile Cuba policy.

The document signed by President Donald Trump established a system of tariffs on imports from countries that provide oil to Cuba in a move deemed part of a strategy of political and economic aggression.

Among the arguments presented by Washington are three main accusations: Cuba constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to U.S. national security, maintains strategic ties with Russia, China, and Iran, and provides political or logistical support to those states.

Mr. López stressed that the U.S. intelligence agencies themselves have documented that Cuba poses no threat whatsoever, as its military capacity is exclusively intended to defend national sovereignty and not to attack other countries, and pointed out that Cuba's international relations are based on principles of international law, solidarity, common interests, and scientific cooperation, with no ties to hostile actions against the United States or to the development of weapons of mass destruction.

He also noted that the policy of economic asphyxiation implemented by Washington replicates the formula of Lester Mallory's 1960 Memorandum, designed to create hardship and discontent among the Cuban population in an attempt to weaken the Revolution.

Likewise, the journalist remarked that Cuba maintains stability and security compared to other nations in the region and reiterated the island’s long-standing willingness to hold talks with the U.S. based on respect and sovereign equality.

His analysis concluded that the executive order sets a dangerous precedent in international relations, as it attempts to dictate to third countries how they should interact with Cuba and what they should do with their own natural resources.
