HAVANA, Cuba, January 13 (ACN) The consequences for the region and the international order of the military aggression perpetrated by the United States government on January 3 in Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president, Nicolás Maduro Moros, were the subject of debate and condemnation by Cuban civil society.
These issues were analyzed in depth as part of the panel "Imperialist Aggression Against Venezuela, the Role of Law, and the Latin American and Caribbean Region as a Zone of Peace," held in the Manuel Galich Room at Casa de las Américas.
The event, convened by the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), the host institution, the Cuban Jurists Association, and the Cuban Chapter of the Network of Intellectuals in Defense of Humanity, brought together specialists who discussed the events from different perspectives, especially regarding the serious violations of international law and their potential repercussions.
Norma Goicochea Estenoz, president of the ACNU, reiterated the perspective defended by United Nations human rights experts, who point out that these actions represent a serious, blatant, and deliberate violation of the most fundamental principles of international law, while also establishing a dangerous precedent that carries the risk of destabilizing the entire region and the world.
She also recalled that the unprovoked use of armed force on the sovereign territory of Venezuela constitutes a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which unequivocally prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State.
This establishes the nature of the attack as an international crime of aggression, attributable to the political and military leaders involved.
Similarly, Goicochea Estenoz reiterated the Cuban civil society's condemnation of the previous unilateral coercive measures, such as the naval blockade and the seizure of oil tankers, as well as the arbitrary and extrajudicial executions of more than 100 fishermen, under the false pretext of combating drug trafficking—a claim they have failed to substantiate and which they recently dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
Regarding the recent statements made by US President Donald Trump and his closest collaborators concerning Cuba, she stated that these confirm their political blindness, their lack of understanding of the Cuban identity, idiosyncrasies, Mambí heritage, and patriotism.
"We have the examples of Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the internationalist struggles in Angola, and therefore, revolutionary Cuban civil society will stand firm against these threats in defense of the homeland," she added.
Given the dangers posed by the current turbulent situation, Cuban intellectual Abel Prieto Jiménez, president of Casa de las Américas, called for the development of emancipatory thought and the formation of resistance groups against the clear advance of fascist ideas within the Washington administration, which threaten global peace and equilibrium.
To this end, Prieto Jiménez appealed to the dignity and struggle of the American people, who are beginning to understand the implications of their government's policies, which disregard life and the most basic principles of peaceful coexistence, and are organizing in opposition to this absurdity being imposed upon them in several cities across the country.
Cuba has condemned from the outset the acts directed against the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which have been characterized as state terrorism, amidst blatant imperial arrogance and overbearing behavior, barbarism, and contempt for humanity, for other peoples, and for the existing international order.
Likewise, the highest leadership of the country has defended the dignity and right of the island to decide its own destiny and relations with the rest of the world, without being subject to interference or blackmail from Washington.
