HAVANA, Cuba, January 8 (ACN) The Cuban Forest Rangers (CGBC) announced that there were three forest fires in the country during the first week of January, when their first protection campaign starts.
The provinces of Artemisa and Matanzas, as well as the special municipality Isla de la Juventud, reported damages amounting to more than 26 hectares of forest.
As part of its annual crusade against wildfires from January 1st until May, when the rainy season begins in the country, the CGBC stresses the need to increase prevention, since negligence accounts for 95% of the deflagrations, caused mainly by the burning of various materials, irresponsible smokers and pedestrians, the circulation of vehicles without spark arresters, poachers, and the illegal castration of beehives.
The Wildfire Protection Campaign, a national system in charge of preventing and fighting forest fires in Cuba, applies a predominantly preventative approach that includes organizational and preparedness actions, drills, and joint communication efforts with the Central State Administration and political, mass, and social organizations.
The impact of drought, accumulated combustible material, weather events, climate change, and negligence call for proactive measures and basic provisions to prevent the loss of millions of dollars.
