Cuban delegation has a busy agenda in Geneva



HAVANA, Cuba, August 12 (ACN) Rudy Montero Mata, Cuban Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) had a very busy schedule in Geneva, Switzerland, at the head of a delegation to the negotiation meeting to design a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution.

Mr. Montero held a meeting with UNCTAD officials to discuss the strengthening of cooperation and technical assistance in science, technology, and innovation parks; e-commerce; the digital economy; and carbon markets, as well as with Josefina Bunge, Chief of Staff of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), to talk about actions to increase collaboration and make the most of Cuba's scientific potential to tackle climate change in her nation―Argentina―and the Caribbean.

Members of the Cuban delegation also met with the sustainability and capacity-building team of the International Organization for Standardization to talk about a joint roadmap toward more cooperation, access to financing, and training Cuban professionals.

Likewise, the Deputy Minister met with Beatriz Amorim-Borher, Director of Cooperation at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to discuss future cooperation on the carbon market, technology parks, and professional training, as well as with Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who praised Cuba’s policies on climate change and environmental protection and stated her opposition to the U.S. blockade.

Mr. Montero also met with Luis Vayas and Jyoti Mathur-Filipp, President and Executive Secretary, respectively, of the Plastics Treaty Negotiating Committee, to whom he reasserted that Cuba will keep advocating for the adoption of an effective agreement that guarantees implementation means for countries in the South.

Then came a meeting with the Undersecretary for Resilience of the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment of Singapore, Teck Kiat Lim, in which both parties underscored their willingness to expand bilateral cooperation on climate change.
