Díaz-Canel highlights historical significance of August 5

HAVANA, Cuba, August 5 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel referred to the historical significance of August 5, 1994 as a symbol of revolutionary unity and a reminder that there will always be dark forces lurking around a genuine Revolution in its difficult times and that only unity can thwart any attempt to destroy it.

In his message, Díaz-Canel included a picture showing Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro with the people, "in a bundle, like the stripes of the national coat of arms," he stated.

On August 5, 1994, Cuba witnessed a day of riots at and near Havana’s seafront avenue, led by an unusual crowd of antisocial elements encouraged by rumors spread by radio stations in the United States about alleged mass departures to that country without any formalities.

The gathering led to acts of violence, looting, and tensions in downtown areas, but the response of the people and Fidel Castro's presence at the epicenter of the events played a key role in restoring order.
