HAVANA, Cuba, August 1 (ACN) Cuba is hosting Breastfeeding Week starting this Friday, which will run until August 7, Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) told the newspaper Granma.
Initiative promotes the benefits of this practice for child development and maternal health. The MINSAP advocates exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and complementary breastfeeding until the age of two.
Sunny Guidotti, deputy representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Cuba, stated that family support for breastfeeding women is essential, stressing that the practice strengthens the newborn's cognitive and immunological development.
For her part, Mercedes Esquivel Lauzurique, of the National Pediatrics Group, specified that a non-breastfed baby is six times more likely to die compared to those who receive breast milk.
Dr. Esquivel emphasized that Cuba implements a breastfeeding support system from conception until the child is two years old.
The World Health Organization identified a lack of counseling and social pressure as causes of early abandonment.
Cuba passed a resolution to protect breastfeeding and regulate human milk banks. Decree Law 84, in effect since 2024, extends maternity leave until the baby is 15 months old.
