Cuba reasserts commitment to multilateralism and peace

HAVANA, Cuba, July 30 (ACN) Speaking to delegates from around the world attending the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP) and of the Council of State, reasserted Cuba's stance in defense of multilateralism, the sovereignty of peoples, and world peace.

Mr. Lazo also denounced the genocide against the Palestinian people and referred to the intensification of the U.S. blockade, stressing that it violates international law and hinders economic development by imposing severe restrictions on the access to medical supplies and essential foods and hampering Cuba's trade with third countries.

Likewise, he highlighted the country's legislative progress through the approval of the Family Code and the Children, Adolescents, and Youth Code, as well as the Health Code and the Cuban Sports System Code.

"The world's parliamentarians can and must do more to solve the major problems facing humanity today and those it will face in the future," he remarked, quoting Fidel Castro's historic words in favor of peace, national sovereignty and human rights.

The Cuban official called for a stronger parliamentary diplomacy as a way to promote constructive dialogue, respect for human rights, and sustainable development and urged the international community to implement a just economic order and prioritize environmental and social justice to guarantee the future of humanity.

Sponsored by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the meeting gathered legislative leaders from many nations with a view to strengthening global dialogue and fostering a just, equitable, and democratic international order.
