HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 18 (ACN) Salvador Valdes Mesa, Cuban VP, signed on Thursday the book of condolences opened by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Havana for the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, July 13, at 82.
According to the official website of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the ceremony, Valdes Mesa extended his heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Nigeria, and highlighted Buhari's commitment to the defense of justice and the well-being of all people, particularly Africans.
Sarah Isong, chargé d'affaires of the Nigerian diplomatic mission, thanked Valdes Mesa for his presence and for his condolences, which she considered an expression of the enormous appreciation for the people and government of that West African country.
The official reaffirmed Nigeria's position of support for Cuba against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States government.
On Monday, Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, expressed his heartfelt condolences on the death of Buhari on behalf of the Cuban people and government.
On X, the president emphasized the sympathy the former Nigerian president always showed toward the Caribbean nation and acknowledged his legacy in defending African sovereignty.
