Cuban agricultural sector seeks sustainability through science

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (ACN) The importance of integrating science into agriculture to boost productive growth and advance toward food sovereignty was reiterated at the joint debate of the Permanent Commission on Education, Culture, Science, Technology, and the Environment, and the Agrifood Commission.

During the discussion by these permanent groups of the National Assembly of People's Power, Ines Maria Chapman Wuagh, Cuba's Deputy Prime Minister, pointed out that it is necessary to socialize good practices regarding the replacement of imported products and high-cost work tools, among the ways to boost the agricultural sector throughout the country.

In the presence of Salvador Valdes Mesa, member of the Party's Political Bureau and Cuban VP, and other Party and government leaders, she emphasized that despite the difficulties in promoting the use of technology, there are tangible results that demonstrate efforts to prioritize basic foodstuffs for the people.
During the day, the general state of this field, which is fundamental to the economy, was deeply discussed.

Representative Mario Pablo Estrada Garcia defended the need to conduct research on seeds, as a fundamental link in the art of farming, in order to strengthen the sector, replace imports, and advance food stability.

Parliament's permanent working committees will meet until tomorrow, as a preliminary step to the 5th Ordinary Session of the highest state body, in its 10th Legislature, which begins this Wednesday, July 16.
