CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, July 4 (ACN) The main results of the Mi Costa (My Coast) International Project were presented at the 15th International Convention on Environment and Development, which is being held from July 1 to 5 at the Havana Convention Center.
Mi Costa is a climate change adaptation initiative that covers the two stretches most vulnerable to sea level rise on Cuba's southern coast.
During a panel with the participation of the national and provincial coordinators of this project, which involves seven coastal settlements and 24 municipalities, they focused on the implementation of actions aimed at restoring hydrological flow to coastal wetlands, ensuring the recovery of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Representatives from the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, and Granma also highlighted the progress made in a capacity-building and strengthening program that offers guarantees for implementing natural solutions for climate change adaptation and making them sustainable.
They addressed other issues related to the rehabilitation of coastal wetlands, which include management and control of invasive plant species and the rehabilitation of mangroves, grasslands, and marsh forests with other native species that increase ecosystem resilience.
Monitoring this natural resource will support local governments in decision-making toward achieving sustainable management, enabling them to implement actions that respond to the needs of the population and the economy.
Marta Rosa Muñoz Campos, Ph.D., director of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences-Cuba Program, the academic institution that designed and directs the Capacity Building and Strengthening Program, praised the progress of this process.
With financial support from the Green Climate Fund, this global initiative is being implemented by the Environment Agency of the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program and with the participation of numerous sectors and institutions in the country.
