HAVANA, Cuba, June 29 (ACN) A Cuban delegation participated in the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI).
Both of these bodies have specific roles related to science, technology, and the implementation of the convention, according to the Department of Communications of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA).
Their meetings are usually intended to organize the Conference of the Parties―to be held this year in Belém, Brazil―and set a course for climate-related negotiations and commitments at international level which are eventually laid down in climate policies.
As an active participant in these events, Cuba has played a conciliatory and mobilizing role in the negotiations to promote and the adoption and implementation of climate commitments and has shared its experiences with other SIDS (Small Island Developing States) in terms of policy and governance frameworks, sustainable practices, and technological applications.
Cuban professionals also attended workshops, lectures and bilateral meetings with institutions and experts with a view to joining related projects and initiatives and exploring opportunities for access to financial resources and presented reports on the progress of the Work Programs on technical and methodological aspects and their applications, based on positive experiences at national and local level.
The conference in Brazil raises expectations regarding the future progress of the carbon market negotiation, the establishment of cooperation links and projects based on international agreements, and the opportunity to review the scope of specific policies, experiences in tackling climate change, and the adoption of sustainable practices.
