HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 27 (ACN) Doctor of Philosophy Georgina Alfonso Gonzalez (Cuba) and her colleague Kali Argyriadis (France) earned the Order “Finlay” for their remarkable merits and valuable contribution to the development of natural or social sciences for the benefit of humanity and the preservation and improvement of the health and welfare of the people.
In a ceremony held at the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) in Havana, both scientists received the medal engraved with the image of one of the six most outstanding microbiologists in history, the Cuban Juan Finlay de Barres (1833-1915), who in 1881 presented his thesis on the female Aedes aegypti mosquito as a transmitter of yellow fever and elaborated an anti-vector plan to eradicate the disease.
Minister Armando Rodríguez Batista congratulated them on their results and praised their capacity to document, study and evaluate social phenomena.
Ms. Alfonso González is an Assistant Researcher with and director of the Institute of Philosophy of Cuba, a professor at the University of Havana, and the Coordinator of the Council of Social Sciences, as well as a member of the study group Latin America: Social Philosophy and Axiology.
Ms. Argyriadis, in turn, is a professional with the Institute of Research for Development and Coordinator of the Cuba-Haiti International Research Network.
