NUEVA GERONA, Cuba, Apr 16 (ACN) “The Isle of Youth has made every endeavor to revitalize its livestock production, an essential sector in the local economy”, said Arley Terán, director of the cattle-raising program in this municipality.
“The progress achieved here has made a positive impact on planning and contracting systems and on the milk and beef production plans”, he remarked. “However, there are still structural challenges and today’s production levels have failed to meet the local demand”
His enterprise also intends to reactivate artificial insemination―stopped due to the nitrogen shortage―and to introduce genetic improvements with the acquisition of breeders and studs, with emphasis on sheep, goats and rabbits, thanks to new investments in feed and fodder production.
“Although great progress has been made, we are still faced with the challenge of making far-reaching transformations to meet people’s food needs and build a self-sufficient and sustainable livestock industry. The joint commitment of producers, authorities and government will pave the way for the future success of this sector”, he pointed out.
