Russia launches first Russian-made vehicle assembled in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 7 (ACN) Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko led the launching ceremony of the first Russian-made vehicle assembled in Cuba, a milestone that marks the strengthening of industrial ties between the two countries.

During his working tour of the Caribbean island, the high-ranking official participated in the opening ceremony, where he cut the symbolic red ribbon and briefly drove the new UAZ model, highlighting its importance for the development of the Cuban automotive sector.

This assembly project is the result of an agreement signed in 2024 between Cuba's Integral Company of Automotive Services (EISA by its Spanish acronym) and the Russian firm ECHO-Export SRL. According to Russian media reports, the agreement was signed during the Cubaindustria 2024 Convention, held in Havana between June 18 and 21 last year.

The agreement establishes, in its first phase, the production of the Patriot and Pickup models, while in a second phase it contemplates the assembly of light load vehicles of the Profi line, Cubadebate reported.

Prior to the event, Chernyshenko announced that Russia plans to promote a project to modernize public transportation in Cuba, which will include the creation of a fleet of cabs. In this regard, he stated: "Russia will transfer 50 Moskvich cars" for this purpose.

In addition to his participation in the ceremony, the Deputy PM held a meeting with Cuban president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, and took part in the sessions of the Russia-Cuba Intergovernmental Commission, which took place in the Cuban capital.
