HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 19 (ACN) Cuba and Canada held the VI Meeting of Inter-Chancellery Political Consultations, a space for dialogue that ratified the good state of bilateral relations between both nations and their willingness to increase cooperation in economic, commercial and political areas.
Chaired by Gerardo Peñalver Portal, Cuba’s First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Canada’s David Morrison, Deputy Minister of Global Affairs, the participants talked about issues of common interest regarding the international and regional political situation and highlighted the 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The Cuban official thanked Canada for its support to the UN resolution against the U.S. blockade and the assistance provided after the passage of hurricanes Oscar and Rafael in 2024.
On his end, Mr. Morrison stressed the importance of these meetings and reiterated Canada's stance against the said U.S. Cuba policy, which he described as contrary to international law for its extraterritorial scope.
Both parties agreed on the need to keep strengthening their relations, with emphasis on the potential for trade and investment.
The Canadian delegation included Shalini Anand, Deputy Minister for the Americas; Sylvie Bédard, Director General for Central America and the Caribbean; and Marianick Tremblay, Canadian Ambassador to Cuba, whereas Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Cuban ambassador to Canada, and Ileana Núñez Mordoche, director for Europe and Canada at MINREX, among other officials, were present on the Cuban side.
