Three Cuban sports legends to receive Doctorate Honoris Causa today

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 7 (ACN) The Cuban University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences (UCCFD by its Spanish acronym) Manuel Fajardo will hold today the second day of investitures of the Doctorate Honoris Causa, the highest award granted by the institution to personalities with exceptional contributions to sport.

On this occasion, former sprinter Enrique Figuerola Camuee, coach Miriam Ferrer Fernandez and Greco-Roman wrestling trainer Raul Trujillo Diaz will be honored.

On February 14, in a ceremony held at the UCCFD's Magistral Hall, Doctor Honoris Causa post mortem distinctions were awarded to Eugenio Rafael George Laffita, Hilarion Ronaldo Veitia Valdivie, Rodrigo Alvarez Cambra and Pedro Val Balgueiras.

Figuerola, a glory of national athletics, marked a milestone by becoming the first Olympic medalist of the Cuban Revolution with his silver in the 100-meter dash at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Although Miriam Ferrer's career as a sprinter included silver in the 4x100 relay at the 1995 Mar del Plata Pan American Games and a national record (42.89 seconds), Ferrer found her true calling as a coach.

Since 2006 she has been masterminding success in para-athletics, guiding such stars as Omara Durand and Yunidis Castillo, multiple Paralympic and world champions.

Raul Trujillo, head of the collective of Greco wrestling coaches, is the author of the legend of Mijain Lopez, five-time Olympic champion and the world's leading exponent of Greco-Roman wrestling.

The Doctorate Honoris Causa of the UCCFD endorses the impact of these three names in Cuban physical culture in a ceremony that strengthens the value of those who, beyond medals, build legacies.
