HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 29 (ACN) With the presentation in Havana of the José Martí International Award to Liceth Angulo Quiñones, director of the Association of United Midwives of the Pacific of Colombia (ASOPARUPA)―based in Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca―the number of Latin American winners since it was instituted by UNESCO in 1994 adds up to 11.
In the presence of more than 600 people from 98 countries to dialogue among civilizations and promote a culture of peace, the prize-giving ceremony took place in Havana in the context of the VI International Conference For World Balance, established by the Executive Council of UNESCO in 1994 in recognition of the universal character and transcendental validity of the ideals of the National Hero of Cuba.
Previous winners include writers, doctors, social scientists, lawyers, artists, professors and intellectuals from Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic, such as former president Hugo Chávez, the Dominican friar Frei Betto, and the painter Oswaldo Guayasamín, among other renowned figures.
