Cuba remembers Celia Sanchez 45 years after her death

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 12 (ACN) In a post on X on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Celia Sánchez’s death, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel evoked her work and her loyalty to Cuba and Fidel, whereas a separate message sent by the Communist Party of Cuba points out that on the day of her departure―January 11, 1980―Celia’s legacy became a source of resistance and inspiration that lives on among the Cubans.

Celia Esther de los Desamparados (1920-1980) was one of the first members of the 26th of July Movement founded by Fidel Castro after the 1953 attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively.

The networks of peasant collaborators that she created and organized to support the landing of the yacht Granma were essential for the survival of the members of the expeditionary force, who would then became the Rebel Army.

After the triumph of the Revolution, she held high positions and made great achievements, such as the development of the Office of Historical Affairs of the Council of State, devoted to the preservation of the historical heritage of the Revolution and, especially, the works of Fidel Castro.

About Celia, who died of cancer at 59, Fidel Castro said: "There was great human quality in her, as was her concern for the people: she never forgot anyone during or after the war; she was the godmother of all the old guerrillas".
