Havana, Jan 8 (ACN) Recalling the caravan of war tanks and trucks with bearded rebels on board led by Fidel Castro, which entered Havana on January 8, 1959 marking the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, groups of youths on army trucks and bearing Cuban flags were welcomed by citizens from all walks of life as they made it from the eastern part of the country to the city capital.
People voicing slogans and greetings, the sound of car horns and songs were part of the emotional ambiance here as the caravan toured different thoroughfares towards the Liberty City school complex, formerly the Columbia Military Camp, center of power during the defeated Fulgencio Batista Dictatorship.
The caravan members made stops at local industries, parks and facilities indifferent municipalities, including the Museum of the Revolution at the former Havana Presidential Palace, which exhibits historic pieces, pictures and testimonies of the revolutionary struggle.
Adriana Pupo, a worker with the Fidel Castro Center, said she was proud as a revolutionary young woman to commemorate the historic event.
Artemio Sosa, a vet from the rebel army, said this action is an opportunity to affirm the support of the majority of the people for the Cuban Revolution, materialized in so many historic struggles waged by different generations of Cubans.
On January 2nd 1959, the Freedom Caravan kicked off it’s over 1-thousand-kilometer trip from eastern to western Cuba. Its arrival in Havana consolidated the triumph of the Cuban revolution after ousting the bloody Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.
