BAYAMO, Cuba, Nov 15 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, president of the National Defense Council, visited today areas of the coastal municipality of Pilon, in the eastern province of Granma, where he is assessing damages and checking the recovery work after the strong earthquakes that shook eastern Cuba on Nov. 10.
The visit began in the Sevilla Popular Council, which groups eight districts and some 4,284 inhabitants, according to its highest representative at the request of the local government, Diogenes Sanz Benitez.
He specified that, out of a total of 1,538 houses, 407 were affected, including 69 total collapses; while 23 state infrastructures show different levels of damages.
In talks with neighbors, provincial and local authorities, Diaz-Canel assured that, despite the economic crisis the country is going through, there are resources available to gradually advance in the recovery.
While also exchanging with specialists from Housing, Commerce, the banking system and social workers, the Cuban President learned about the operation of the office created in the community itself to assist the victims, provide guidance and facilitate the acquisition of construction materials, among other responsibilities.
The president was accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba; Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee; Eduardo Martinez Diaz, deputy prime minister; and Major General Ramon Pardo Guerra, chief of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense.
