HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 23 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who chairs the National Defense Council, highlighted the international solidarity with the situation in the island, as opposed to the inaction of the United States, which keeps in place its economic, commercial and financial blockade.
In his message, Díaz-Canel remarked that 41 countries and several international organizations have expressed solidarity with Cuba, “faced with the simultaneous impacts of a cyclone and an energy emergency and showing admirable resilience. (…) The United States says that we have not asked for anything. Well, this is our demand: Tumba el bloqueo (Lift the blockade)”.
According to official figures, Washington's hostile Cuba policy has caused damages and material losses to the island amounting to more than USD five billion between March 1, 2023 and February 29, 2024 and brought further financial limitations by preventing Cuba’s access to credits to repair and refurbish its power plants and buy the necessary fuel to guarantee a stable electricity service for the population and the national economy.
The U.S. disregards the rejection of the international community, which for more than 30 years has supported Cuba's resolution on the need to put an end to the blockade, and has not only kept it in place but made it stronger.
