Cuban province presents research at Congress of Marine Sciences

SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Oct 1 (ACN) Researchers from the Caguanes National Park (PNC), the Center for Environmental Services and the Environment Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, in the Cuban central province of Sancti Spiritus, will defend three studies at the 12th Congress of Marine Sciences, which takes place as of today, in Havana.

Among the researches, the one related to the environmental evaluation of the Ancon Peninsula, a coastal ecosystem in the south of the territory considered very fragile and that suffers the consequences of several actions produced or modified by man's activities and with incidence in the stability of the scenario, stands out.

The particularities of the study, refers that after several monitoring, problems were identified such as poor management of liquid and solid waste, proliferation of exotic and invasive plants and excessive infrastructure in areas of sun exposure and dunes.

It also indicates other situations in coastal erosion, mechanical affectations in mangrove areas and shallow reefs, in addition to the lack of environmental culture in some local decision-makers.

In addition, other studies on community participation for adaptation to climate change, a subject with solid experiences in the coastal area of the northern coast of the province, in settlements located within the PNC, will be presented at the meeting held at the Meliá Habana Hotel and the National Aquarium of Cuba.

Likewise, the evaluation of adaptation actions based on ecosystems in Caguanes itself will be presented, a research that deepens in the work of the coastal resilience project implemented in the Sancti Spiritus, specifically in the intervention area of the Vitoria community, in the municipality of Yaguajay.

Some 300 delegates from six countries are attending until October 4 the activities of the Congress of Marine Sciences, which include six symposiums and an initial class.

The event's main theme is Cuban science for the resilience of coastal marine ecosystems and brings together professionals from different disciplines linked, in turn, to coastal and marine observation systems, services and technologies.
