HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 16 (ACN) Jose Fidel Santana Nuñez, first deputy minister of the Cuban ministry of science, technology and environment (Citma by its Spanish acronym), ratified in Brazil the political will and commitment of the Cuban state and government to the Conventions on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Desertification and Drought.
Santana Nuñez renewed his country's environmental vocation, while speaking at the Special Session of the Forum of Ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean, which concluded its sessions in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
The Communications Department of Citma quoted a summary of his speech, according to which, there are advances in the legal-legislative basis and in the achievement of the goals, in spite of the main obstacle represented by the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the government of the United States for more than 60 years.
He considered these next three Rio de Janeiro conventions to be of utmost importance for all the nations of the Latin American and Caribbean region, as it is among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, is home to the greatest biological diversity in the world and to the growing damage caused by drought and desertification.
The convening of the Special Session of the Forum responds to the need to improve the exchange of ideas on climate action, biodiversity and land degradation and restoration in the region with a view to future Conferences of the Parties.
The Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean, established in 1982, is the oldest and most important space for political dialogue and collaboration on environmental issues in the region.
