HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 5 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel evoked Major General Romárico Vidal Sotomayor García, Hero of the Republic, who died on September 1 at the age of 85 and whose ceremonial funeral and burial he attended Wednesday along with the leader of the Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz.
“Honor to whom honor is due,” the President wrote about the decorated combatant. “A man who was a chief and a brother, as his comrades recognized”.
Sotomayor, who joined the Rebel Army at 18 in the Sierra Maestra mountains under the orders of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, fulfilled various missions after the Triumph of the Revolution in the Ministries of the Armed Forces (FAR) and of the Interior (MININT) as deputy minister, head of the National Revolutionary Police and of the Political Division of MININT, of the General Staff of the Eastern Army, and of the Southern Troops Grouping in the People's Republic of Angola.
He earned the honorary title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba in November 2015, as well as countless decorations and recognitions that bear witness to his long and brilliant service record.
In the prologue of the book Sin olvidar mis raíces (Without forgetting my roots), Army General Raúl Castro Ruz wrote: “There are no mysteries about the way General Sotomayor has managed to fulfill successfully such dissimilar and complex missions. To this end, his unconditional loyalty to our people, to the Homeland, to the Revolution, to his Commander in Chief and to those who have acted in his name, as well as his trust in the decisions of his superiors and his absolute determination to fulfill them have been essential”.
