SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jul 2 (ACN) Faced with the possible danger that could represent the hurricane Beryl, category four on the Saffir-Simpson scale, for the southeastern part of the country, the province of Santiago de Cuba remains attentive and with a strict meteorological surveillance.
Lieutenant Colonel Gustavo Alvarez, head of the Civil Defense body in this territory, referred to the Cuban News Agency that "Beryl" at 12:00 hours on Monday was in the arc of the Antilles, reporting significant rainfall, winds with gusts above 230 kilometers (km) and strong coastal swells and floods.
According to him, the results of the forecast models coincide in that the trajectory cone will move to the south or over Jamaica, causing the deterioration of the weather conditions in the untamed locality since Wednesday morning, due to its proximity to that nation.
He said that special attention should be paid to rainfall, as it is possible that it will increase from light to moderate, and in some areas to locally intense, mainly in the coastal municipality of Guama.
Regarding winds, he commented that they should be reported as tropical storm winds between 75 and 85 km per hour, or a higher gust where severe local storms occur.
Alvarez called on the population to be aware of the guidelines issued by the Civil Defense, to take preventive precautionary measures and, in case it is necessary to protect people, to know where to do so, as well as not to wander around bridges, dangerous places or places with swollen rivers, in order to avoid any loss of human lives, and also to protect the material resources of the economy, to avoid losses.
