HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 19 (ACN) Gerardo Peñalver Portal, Cuban first deputy foreign minister and permanent representative of the island to the UN, met with Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the organization, Cuban foreign ministry said today.
During the exchange, held at UN headquarters, both parties discussed issues of common interest on the multilateral agenda.
Peñalver Portal, who is concluding his diplomatic mission to New York, thanked Guterres and the United Nations Secretariat for the permanent support provided during the performance of his duties.
He referred to the efforts made by Cuba to update its economic and social development model and make progress in the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda, efforts that, the Cuban representative explained, are hampered by the genocidal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States and the arbitrary inclusion of Cuba in the list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
Cuban deputy minister commented on Washington's recent failed efforts to choke the economy, cause hardship to our population and encourage demonstrations of discontent and violent actions.
For his part, Guterres highlighted Cuba's work and activism at the multilateral level, especially in the context of its chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China in 2023 and underscored Cuba's commitment to the United Nations System and multilateralism.
The meeting was also attended by ambassadors Yuri Gala Lopez and Yusnier Romero Puentes, alternate permanent representatives of Cuba to the UN, counselor Alejandro Gonzalez Behmaras, and first secretary Martha Garcia Hernandez.
