HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 24 (ACN) Cuba announced the official entry into force of regulations on the Operational Direction of the Protection Campaign against Forest Fires in the country, designed by the Ministry of the Interior and intended to both strengthen the current safeguards and establish the duties of the Central State Administration Bodies involved in the said effort with a view to mitigating the effects of wildfires.
According to the new provisions, the Cuban Forest Ranger Corps is in charge of the National Working Group that rules over the Campaign with the participation of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense and several ministries, including those of Agriculture, Transportation, and Science, Technology and the Environment, as well as the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the National Institute of Water Resources, and the Institute of Information and Social Communication, among other entities.
The resolution is revealing of the Cuban government’s will to undertake a cross-sectional approach to the prevention of and struggle against wildfires, a serious global phenomenon linked to climate change.
During the first five months of 2023, Cuba registered 613 wildfires that destroyed 13,980.51 hectares of forests and 489.50 hectares of swamp grasslands.
