HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 7 (ACN) On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the attack on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, Miguel Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, called for the total, irreversible and verifiable elimination of nuclear weapons.
On Twitter, the president recalled his visit to Hiroshima seven years ago in which he paid tribute to the 170,000 human beings who were victims of the nuclear attack.
It was a criminal, unnecessary and morally unjustifiable act; this is a part of history that mankind must never forget, he declared during his stay in the Asian city.
Achieving nuclear disarmament in the world is one of the oldest objectives of the United Nations, reflected in the first resolution approved by the General Assembly in 1946; however, there are currently around 12,705 nuclear weapons.
To make governments aware of the importance of controlling these weapons, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is celebrated every September 26 as an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to nuclear disarmament.
