HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 4 (ACN) The work of Special Education professionals in Cuba was highlighted today by the minister of the sector, Ena Elsa Velazquez Cobiella, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this educational system in the country.
On Twitter, the minister praised the infinite love, sensitivity and daily dedication of those who educate children, adolescents and young people with disabilities.
Before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution (in January 1959), this form of education was practically nonexistent, since only 14 institutions throughout the country attended 134 children with intellectual, hearing, visual and language impairments.
After 1959, organized, massive and systematic attention began to be offered to children in need of Special Education services.
According to sector authorities, there are currently 344 special schools, with more than 32,000 students and 14,000 teachers.
The main event for the 60th anniversary of Special Education will take place on January 6, at the Dora Alonso School for children with autism spectrum, in Ciudad Escolar Libertad, in Havana.
