CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Dec 18 (ACN) Cuban anti-terrorist heroes René González and Ramón Labañino highlighted in Ciego de Avila the significance, as a collective victory, of their return to the homeland on December 17, 2014, after serving unjust imprisonment in U.S. jails.
On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the return, René thanked the people on behalf of the Cuban Five (René González, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández and Fernando González) and recalled that it was a battle in response to the call of Fidel (Castro).
He recalled how the people were mobilized, which in turn mobilized the forces around the world in favor of the cause of the anti-terrorist fighters.
He emphasized that today we are living through complex moments, because the same hatred that was poured on them is poured with force on the people of Cuba and bets to crush the Revolution, nevertheless, the spirit that made the Cubans one to achieve their return, must also be renewed to overthrow imperialism.
The latest events, he stressed, have brought out the patriotism that will make Cuba triumph again in the face of the new wave of revanchism that today has come upon us.
December 17 is a testimony of a collective victory that corresponds to all of us as Cubans, not to anyone in particular, he said.
In turn, Ramón Labañino emphasized that the love of the people with the Five has been present all these years, which satisfies and fills with joy, but also entails a high responsibility to live up to what is expected of them.
In the historic moment the country is living, he said, both in the fight against subversion and in the economic battle, we will be in the front line, clarifying and fighting from the networks always at the side of the Revolution.
The date, he said, reminds him that it has been seven years of immense joy, to be born again and to return to a Cuba that is also being born with new development projects, together with the people, the family and the work plans.
This people deserve the lives we have given and will continue to give for the Revolution, said the anti-terrorist fighter, who on this occasion shares the anniversary with the people of Avila and attends the inauguration of new socio-economic works.
Together with René and Ramón, Antonio Guerrero, who for the occasion presented his book Nunca habrá soledad para ti, composed of the correspondence he kept with his mother, Mirtha Rodríguez, during the 17 months he remained in the "hole" (isolation cell) of the Federal Detention Center of Miami, also shared the visit to the territory of the island.
The Five, as they were known worldwide, suffered undeserved sentences in the United States and were able to be reunited in their homeland on December 17, 2014, after a process of negotiations between the two countries.
