HAVANA, Cuba, May 28 (acn) For the second consecutive year, Cuba will join the celebration for the Global Running Day, an initiative that will seek to keep the planet in motion for 24 hours next Sunday, June 2.
The Cuban capital was chosen among the cities that will host the Run 24:1, a global campaign promoted by the International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF), in which a series of 24 one-mile runs will be contested around the world to inspire and motivate people to experience the excitement of running..
Javier Sotomayor, men´s high jump world record holder, told the press that the aim of the event is not to be competitive, but to involve all people without age distinction interested in combating sedentary lifestyle.
Sotomayor, Barcelona 1992 Olympic champion and twice world monarch, said that this event will be dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana.
He added that the Cuban mile can be run or walked, according to the preference of each person, with start and finish at Prado Street, and departure time at 9:00 am.
According to a communication issued by IAAF, the Running Day will be part of a full week of activities of the Global Running Day, which begins next June 1 and ends up on the 7th of the same month.
